Hockey teammates given reward for saving the life of a fellow player

Ron Klippenstein and Dan Szun utilized an AED to keep Jim Kirby alive after a heart attack. The 2 Winnipeg men who saved the life of their teammate during a hockey game were recognized by the city’s fire department for their rapid actions.

Timely action to save a life

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service awarded its first Citizen Recognition Award to Ron Klippenstein and Dan Szun who helped Jim Kirby when he suffered a heart attack at the Glenwood Community Centre during a regular pickup game.

According to Kirby, he is happy to be here today and it is largely due to the help of Dan and Ron and their rapid action. He could not recall the incident but thankful for what his friends did.

The fire officials encourages the public to understand the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and learn how to properly use a defibrillator.
