Importance of first aid and CPR

According to one of the students from Southern Ontario, and who is taking part in the training, Elizabeth Bradley said that there are plenty of emergencies that happen on the reserve. People in the area do not know how to respond to these types of emergencies. Jaylon Atagootak, another student from Yellowknife had an experience when he was child and just about seven years old, he helped in rescuing his father. The snowmobile of his father hit a tree. The leg of his father was severely injured.

The long-term goal of this project is to train indigenous instructors to become first aid instructors and teach indigenous people become a trainer in first aid.

He provided first aid to his father.  His father instructed him what to do. Atagootak wrapped the leg of his father very tightly to minimize the bleeding and bring him back to the kamotik or sled. He turned the sled out the area and get his father to safety was the ultimate goal. According to Agootak, it was very hard for him, because he was just seven years old.

The five indigenous students who are participating in the training came from Ontario, Labrador, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. They received a five days training from a charitable organization that teaches and provide first aid and emergency medicines to the public. There are only few people in the indigenous communities have ever taken first aid courses. The participants in this project can become first aid instructors and can provide free first aid training to some people in their communities.

The long-term goal of this project is to train indigenous instructors to become first aid instructors and teach indigenous people become a trainer in first aid. It will eventually make knowledge and instruction of first aid become available even in the most remote areas of the communities.

The five indigenous students who are participating in the project were chosen by Inspire. It is a national charity that supports education for indigenous communities.
