EHS donates AED to Donkin community

Wilfred Edmunds recounts his near-death experience where he was saved with the help of an AED.

Importance of AEDs

At the time of the incident, Edmunds was attending Remembrance Day services at Donkin’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch and he was to place a wreath during the annual ceremony. When he walked down into the basement and bent over to pick up a wreath, he suddenly fell to the ground, suffering a cardiac arrest.

With both artificial respiration and an automated external defibrillator (AED), he was revived.

Luckily, there were 5 nurses, a paramedic and a naval serviceman who were taking part in the ceremony and able to help him. With both artificial respiration and an automated external defibrillator (AED), he was revived.

The paramedic who assisted the group in reviving Edmunds was Allister Edwards with the Emergency Health Services (EHS). He stated that reviving Edmunds was a team effort which would not be possible without the efforts of everyone involved.

Edmunds and Edwards renewed acquaintance in a ceremony that saw one of these life-saving devices find a permanent home in Donkin. Thanks to Edwards and EHS, Donkin now has an AED in the foyer of the seniors complex.
